Moxa is traditionally made from a herb called mugwort, which is pressed and rolled into sticks or small cones. The moxa is lighted and held over the skin so that it warms an area. Modern moxa comes in the form of a smokeless charcoal rather than the raw herb as the smoke can be off-putting for some clients.
